ACADEMY TRAINING:

Your career as a Duncan Police Officer will begin with extensive training at C.L.E.E.T.(council of Law Enforcement Education and Training) located in Ada OK. Police recruits will reside at the academy and participate in an intensive training program that includes instruction in a variety of law enforcement topics. Some of these topics will include criminal law, firearms, patrol procedures and defensive tactics. Police recruits will be earning a full salutary with benefits while at the State Police Academy.

FIELD TRAINING OFFICER PROGRAM:

After graduating from C.L.E.E.T. recruit officers are assigned to a Field Training Officer (FTO) for further training. Recruit Officers are required to successfully complete a minimum of 16 weeks of FTO instruction. Recruit Officers will work all three patrol shifts spending a minimum of four weeks on each shift and will be evaluated by several FTOs. During this time Recruit Officers will be evaluated on a variety of topics such as Officer Safety, Orientation, Report writing and Community relations.

SOLO ASSIGNMENT:

Upon the completion of the FTO program, new officers are on probation and assigned to solo patrol duties for their first year of service, after which the officer is removed from probationary status. Daily activities of solo officers involve patrolling the City of Duncan, responding to calls of service, making arrests, investigating crimes and traffic collisions, issuing citations, testifying in court and working within the community to help resolve problems.

SPECIALTIES:

As you continue in your law enforcement career, you may want to apply for a specialized field within the Duncan Police Department. Many people have the misconception that because Duncan is not as big as other cities that their career will be limited but the truth is we have several areas where an officer’s talents can be utilized. We have several Officers which have become Instructors in specialized fields such as Defensive Tactics, Firearm and Driver Training. These instructors periodically return to assist teaching at C.L.E.E.T. and also instruct veteran Duncan Officers during in house training. Some of the teams and special assignments at the police department include: K-9 Officers, Narcotics Investigations, Field Training Officers, Criminal Investigation Division SWAT Team, Crisis Negotiators, Bicycle Officers, Accident Investigators and Traffic Enforcement, School Resource Officers, and Lake Patrol

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Between the ages of 21 and 45
  • Good physical condition
  • Valid Drivers License
  • No Felony convictions
  • If applicable, military service with honorable discharge as stipulated on a DD214
